People tracking in service industry
People are an integral part of any service industry – be it the customer or the employee or the consultant or the hospital owner. In mid sized and multi location small businesses, it is important to ensure that the right people are hired ; and available at the right location to cater to different needs. Patient care to consulting rooms to maintenance and front office and accounting and billing and other utility staff. They could be working in different departments to meet the internal and external needs of the speciality or eye care hospital. In an earlier post, I spoke about how hospitals can improve operational efficiency by deploying smart sensors to monitor and track high value equipment such as ultrasound machines, microscopes, portable ECG machines etc.
Traditional attendance monitoring solutions provide an excellent method to understand the check in and check out time of the regulars at the hospital. These electronic devices are easily integrated with human resource and accounting departments for the purpose of marking attendance, updation of muster roll and calculating salaries, overtime and deductions if any.

However, these solutions are not capable of providing information on the exact location of people – be it the employee or the patient or the consulting doctor and would require either swiping a card or using the thumb impression to validate the identity. How much time they spend at each location, over crowding and queue management. Sometimes, timely availability of people in emergency and casualty wards can help save lives.
Deploying an Internet of Things (IOT) enabled object tracking solution can help ascertain the time spent at each of the locations within the hospital. The intelligent, high autonomy, non invasive, contactless and emission norm compliant tags can easily be attached to identification cards, out patient registration tickets and name badges to provide hospitals with realtime information on location and history of people movement within departments, cafeteria, parking lots and other locations. The workforce / people tracking tags have a range of 30 – 900 meters depending on the application and layout of the hospital.
The data captured by the devices are stored on our software, analysed to provide valuable insights on people behavior – movement during rush hours, time of the day, departments and outside locations ; which would help hospitals redesign the workflow. The workflow patterns and people location information are available as instant alerts and web pages on smartphones, tablets – also as integrated panel for existing hospital ERP where needed.
Our technologies are build on world class platform Acquia Drupal 8, a web content management framework used by corporations worldwide – known for its ability to handle high volume transactions – with a choice of cloud hosted or on premise servers. The IOT components are integrated through partnerships with leading electronic design and research teams from the European Union and our office at Netherlands and Singapore.
